This Storyteller has me reflecting on how I begin my day, and reminding me of the benefits of turning to God before turning to my phone.

20 years after Katrina, I’m reflecting on the storm that nearly broke New Orleans—and the resilience that brought us back. In the months after the flood, three rival schools—St. Paul’s, Trinity, and Isidore Newman—joined together to form St. Truman. For a brief but powerful season, children’s laughter returned to our classrooms, bringing joy to weary hearts and hope to families finding their way home.

This July’s Storyteller marks a significant moment in my life: the beginning of the end of a 30-year career in school leadership, and the start of something entirely new. After serving for many years as Head of School, I’m stepping into a different role: Middle School Principal. It’s a shift filled with purpose, reflection, and excitement for what’s ahead. With screen time and technology usage at an all-time high, youth in our society are in danger of losing touch with nature. The young people who will someday be tasked with saving the Earth have little familiarity with it.

Jenn will be gone for 20 years when the summer of 2026 rolls around.  That seems impossible.  My biggest fear after her passing never happened. 

Over the years, I have watched schools transition from compartmentalized learning to integrating subject areas, shifting to hands-on, experiential learning, and embracing the necessity for developing critical thinking skills. This shift laid the groundwork for the major educational changes on the horizon today.

As our children grew up, we grew closer together. We held hands everywhere we went. How do you let that go after 40 years of marriage?

Our liminal moment in education is the threshold on which we are currently balancing.

We pray to God for answers and healing, but when the answers come, and they're not what we expect, our faith can disappear.

Among all the bustle of the season, I try to remind myself of the true spirit of Christmas and the reason for the holiday.

Thanksgiving is here, and I am inspired by the thought that I want to be the one.  I want to get to where gratitude is not an afterthought.

October marks the 1st anniversary of Storyteller and I'm celebrating the occasion by doing something I've never done before.

We are navigating a new world of education, and they are charting their courses along with us.

I recently saw a LinkedIn moniker that read:  Retired.  Walking on Sunshine. I love that and decided to explore it a little further.

As challenges arise, I revisit times when I have witnessed friends and loved ones demonstrate resilience by relying on grace and love.
